  • Why does black iron oxide sludge develop inside central heating systems?

Iron oxide, or magnetite, is a result of natural oxidation inside nearly all untreated iron pipe systems. Any structure built before 1960 is likely to have iron pipe, and these systems are still in use today. Fine particles of iron oxide eventually build up to form a black sludge.

  • Does MagnaClean just filter out iron oxide?

Larger, non-magnetic debris such as scale will also be filtered out in the top and bottom capture zones of residential filters, while magnetic debris will collect around the magnet in the canister.

  • How do I remove the sludge from the filter after it’s collected?

Simply remove the magnetic rod and sheath over a bucket or sink. Once the sheath is removed, the magnetite falls off. You can rinse off any residue very easily with running water. For MagnaClean Commercial filters, which contain multiple rods, each rod can be lifted out individually allowing the magnetite to fall into the base of the filter. Once all the rods have been removed, remove the drain nut at the base of the filter and flush out b slowly opening the valve on the flow side of the filter.

  • When using MagnaClean, how do you keep the loosened magnetite from flowing back into the system?

The magnets installed in all ADEY filters are very strong rare earth magnets. They are arranged in a unique array to hold the magnetite as it builds up, but without completely blocking the canister. It stays attached to the magnetic rods until you remove them to rinse, and will not get pulled back into system water.

  • Are there any moving parts?

No – MagnaClean works as water flows around the magnet. It is directed in a cyclonic flow around the inside of the canister due to the design of the inlet and outlet valve, maximising first-pass capture without the need for moving parts.

  • Are there any parts to replace?

No – the magnet will last for the lifetime of the system.

  • What is the range of applications MagnaClean covers?

There is a MagnaClean for nearly every installation. There are models for everything from small properties to large commercial and industrial applications. Here are the options, for easy reference: Single-family properties: MagnaClean Micro2 for up to 10 radiators; the MagnaClean Professional2 for 15 radiators; and the MagnaClean Professional2XP for larger domestic buildings. Multi-family or large properties, as well as light-commercial facilities: MagnaClean DualXP for 1 1/2" and 1 1/4" pipework. The ADEY commercial filters come in five sizes: 2”, 3”, 4”, 6” and 8”.

  • Is MagnaClean for retrofit applications or new construction?

Both. Whether you’re retrofitting or installing a new system, the process is quick and simple.

  • What is the retrofit process?

For domestic applications, it is a simple process. Easy to follow instructions are included with every filter. As an example, for a Pro2 Filter, a 150mm section of copper pipe is cut out, compression fittings are fixed to the pipe, and then compression fittings are tightened. Watch a video about it here.

  • How often does MagnaClean need to be serviced/cleaned?

After initial installation and checking first pass capture of magnetite, usually once a year alongside the boiler service.

  • Does it come with a warranty?

Yes – a 10-year warranty is standard with the MagnaClean Micro2 and Professional2 filter.

  • Are chemicals needed in addition to a MagnaClean filter?

Yes, they are recommended as part of ADEY’s Best Practice System. Use MC3+ Cleaner before installing MagnaClean to loosen existing debris, sludge, lime scale deposits and system corrosion. Use MC1+ Inhibitor after installation to protect against further system corrosion.

  • What is the difference between RAPIDE and regular System Treatment Formulas?

Same formulas, different dosing methods. RAPIDE can be dosed in just 20 seconds into a fill point using the attached adaptorsr on the rapid-dose nozzle, while regular bottled formulas can be poured into the MagnaClean canister.

  • How do you determine the dilution of the cleanser?

One bottle handles up to 125L of system water.

  • Are there other solutions for removing iron oxide?

Yes, but none that work this well to remove iron oxide. There are mesh strainers and basket filters, both of which can clog or reduce the flow inside a system. Also, because individual particles of magnetite are .0003 microns in size, they are too small to be caught by the holes in mesh strainers. It would be like trying to catch a football in a net with holes the size of the Statue of Liberty. MagnaClean captures iron oxide particles completely independently of particle size.

  • When using MagnaClean, how do you keep the loosened magnetite from flowing back into the system?

It stays attached to the magnetic rods until you remove them to rinse, and will not get pulled back into system water.

  • Why are the valves labelled A & B?

This is solely for our reference. Valve A is a slip collar.

  • Can the valves be fitted either way?

    Yes.

  • Can I install the filter horizontally?

This is not recommended as it could cause air locks in the filter, it will be difficult to service and may cause flow restrictions. It will also have an impact on the collection of non-magnetic debris.

  • Can I fit a whole bottle of chemical into the canister?

No, we would suggest doing half at a time (quarter of a bottle for MagnaClean Micro2).

  • Can either port be used as the inlet?

    Yes, the filter is bi-directional.

  • How many radiators will a MagnaClean Micro2 clean?

A MagnaClean Micro2 will sufficiently maintain a clean system on up to 10 radiators.

  • How frequently do I need to clean the filter?

We recommend it is cleaned once a year, using the ADEY Best Practice six-step process.

  • Will the filter capture non-magnetic debris?

Yes, as long as it is installed in accordance to our instructions.

  • What is MC3+?

MC3+ is our system cleaner specially designed to remove central heating system sludge and debris. Use as part of the ADEY 6-step Best Practice Process.

  • How long can I leave MC3+ in the system?

From 1 hour, up to a maximum of 28 days. As part of our best practice we recommend leaving it in for as long as possible (not exceeding 28 days).

  • What is MC1+?

MC1+ protects against both system corrosion and limescale deposit build up.

  • How long can I leave MC1+ in the system?

This is designed to stay in your system.

  • How do you put MC3+ RAPIDE and MC1+ RAPIDE into the system?

These can either be put in via the air vent on your filter or your radiator as they are in pressurised canisters.

  • Where can I fit MagnaClean® TwinTech?

MagnaClean TwinTech is suitable for all central heating systems and can be fitted anywhere on the main heating circuit. In order to achieve the best protection for the boiler, it is recommended that MagnaClean TwinTech is fitted between the last radiator and the boiler (see diagram). In determining a suitable location for installation, it is important to ensure you allow adequate access for servicing.

  • Which connection on the MagnaClean TwinTech canister is the flow and which is the return?

The bottom inlet is the flow, with the arrow pointing into the canister. The top outlet is the return with the arrow pointing away from the canister. There is no flow restriction.

  • Can I fit MagnaClean TwinTech horizontally?

MagnaClean TwinTech is designed to be fitted vertically. Each isolation valve can rotate through 360°. The copper pipe provided makes it possible to fit vertically on any pipe configuration.

  • How often do I service MagnaClean TwinTech?

MagnaClean TwinTech has been designed to retain on average a years’ worth of magnetic and nonmagnetic particles, meaning that servicing need only be done once a year with the annual boiler service. If the system has a heavy sludge build-up, or a power-flush was not carried out, we recommend cleaning the filter at appropriate intervals during the first year of installation and annually thereafter. It is easy to check the filter periodically, following the instructions in the Installation & Servicing leaflet.

  • Can I use chemicals with MagnaClean TwinTech?

Yes. You can use any chemical or acid agents on the market with MagnaClean TwinTech. The patented ‘Pro-Fill’ air vent has been designed to allow installers to insert chemicals directly into the system as described in the Installation and Servicing leaflet. Chemical dosing kits for this purpose are available to purchase through your local plumbing merchant.

  • What is the lifespan of MagnaClean TwinTech?

MagnaClean TwinTech has been designed to last for the lifetime of the boiler, normally ten years. It provides continuous protection and comes with a two-year warranty. Registering your warranty is straightforward and can be done online at www.adeysolutions.co.uk.

  • How do I isolate the valves?

Simply turn the valves to the marked OFF position using the chrome spanner provided. The valves rotate 360°in either direction. Important - Remember to switch off the electrical supply to the boiler when servicing MagnaClean TwinTech.

  • What can I install on 28mm pipework?

We recommend installing MagnaClean Professional 28mm which has been designed for this purpose.

  • I have a pacemaker, will MagnaClean TwinTech affect me?

As with all magnetic products, if you have a pacemaker caution should be taken when handling MagnaClean TwinTech at all times. When MagnaClean TwinTech is installed, the magnetic field outside the canister is approximately one tenth of an average fridge magnet.

  • What other size MagnaClean products do you provide?

When a MagnaClean product is required for larger pipework, up to 35mm, two MagnaClean Professional 28mm units can be fitted in parallel with no flow restriction. For pipework larger than 35mm we would recommend using MagnaClean Industrial from our commercial range. For more information call our sales team direct on 01242 233702.

  • Does the flow go into the top or bottom outlet?

The flow through the MagnaClean PowerFlushing Filter should enter the bottom right and exit top left, allowing the PowerFlushing Filter to collect large or heavy particles at the bottom of the filter and prevent them from continuing in the flow.

  • What size hose does the PowerFlushing Filter fit?

The PowerFlushing Filter is provided with universal quick release fittings, so it can be used with any power-flush machine.

  • Can the flow be reversed on the PowerFlushing Filter?

Yes the PowerFlushing Filter has been designed for use in both forward and reverse flow. We recommend when reversing the flow, that 15 seconds in each direction (forward, reverse, forward, reverse, forward) will agitate the water well and ensure that the sludge is mobilised. After agitating the water, be sure to set the flow direction so that the liberated sludge is caught by the PowerFlushing Filter and does not pass back into the boiler.

  • Can I use chemicals with PowerFlushing Filter?

Yes you can use any chemical or acids on the market in the PowerFlushing Filter. You can also use the large black canisters as a dosing vessel to release the chemical into the system.

  • What temperature does the PowerFlushing Filter work to?

The PowerFlushing Filter will work with temperatures up to 100°C.

  • Where should I fit the PowerFlushing Filter on the circuit?

Simply measure 400 – 500mm from the return hose to your power-flush machine. Next, make a cut in the pipe and attach to the PowerFlush Filter following the set-up instructions provided, using the quick release couplings and jubilee clips included. This ensures that the PowerFlushing Filter will protect your pump and components on your power-flush machine.
